Ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM)

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a 24-hour test that measures blood pressure while you're moving around and going about your daily life. It's a more accurate way to measure blood pressure than home or office blood pressure, and can help diagnose and treat high blood pressure.

A technician attaches a cuff to your upper arm and a small monitor to a belt around your waist.

The monitor takes your blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night.

After 24 hours, the technician removes the monitor and cuff, and downloads the data for analysis.

ABPM can help diagnose and monitor:

  • White coat hypertension: How your blood pressure behaves during your day-to-day activities
  • Dipper status: How much your blood pressure drops while you sleep
  • Morning surges: If your blood pressure increases in the morning
  • Total burden of hypertension: The overall impact of hypertension
